Fiber artist Irene Agbaje is drawn to the limitations of textile techniques like weaving – the strict, almost rigid nature of the medium. In recent years, she has been weaving with metal and materials more suited for public spaces. She never pretends the loom is a camera; her art never claims to depict reality, yet it still draws from it. Shadows, light, movement, intervals, change – still images of the surroundings weave their way into her works.

During Stockholm Craft Week, the textile artist Irene Agbaje is opening her 140 squaremeter studio on Långholmen, a lively workspace where at least three projects are underway simultaneously. In the weaving room, with its two countermarch looms, the foundations for both smaller and larger textile works are created. At least ten finished works in various techniques and formats will be on display. The bead weaving, which was created for a public art commission in Dalen, will be the centerpiece.
