For more than forty years, Britta Marakatt-Labba has highlighted Sámi culture and history in her embroideries, graphic works, installations, and sculptures. Her embroidered landscapes depict Sámi life and daily routines, but also the abuses of colonialism and a nature threatened by exploitation. Britta Marakatt-Labba was politically active early on. In the early 1980s, she participated in the fight against the expansion of the Alta River, and her social commitment continues to play an important role in her artistry today. Her art is also a significant inspiration for new generations in their struggle for the environment and Sámi rights.
