ArkDes

ArkDes is a national museum and authority with a government mission to enhance the understanding of and initiate discussions about the impact of architecture and design on our lives, based on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm. As an agency, we also conduct practice-oriented research projects in line with our mission in the Policy for Designed Living Environments. This policy area is concerned with the significant role of architecture, design, art, and cultural heritage in shaping living environments.

Torget: Power of Places

Step into ArkDes and onto Torget, a place to engage in discussions on the transformation our societies are undergoing today to meet tomorrow’s challenges. In the 2024 Torget installation you can immerse yourself in Power of Places, a research project in which, Layered, a group of architects and artists, examines how the Nyhamnen district in Malmö could be developed by making the most out of what already exists. Layered have studied and mapped everything – from buildings and materials to local people’s experiences and dreams about its future. The installation concerns the relevance of craft in city development and the importance of weaving together what exists in public spaces with the, sometimes invisible, relationships and networks that comprise our cities and communities. Come and weave with MalmöVÄV, on site all week!

Att väva samman staden

A talk on the role of crafts in city development. Through the research project "Power of Places" the architect and artist group Layered investigates how the Nyhamnen area in Malmö can be developed if, instead of producing new things, we use what already exists. Arts and craft group MalmöVÄV has, in its collaboration with Layered, played a vital role in the realisation of the project. MalmöVÄV's practice opens questions about the transformative potential of crafts, how we view material resources and our future living environments.

In the panel:
Pernilla Wåhlin Norén, city architect in Borlänge
Helena Hansson, design researcher and senior lecturer, HDK-Valand
Betty Norling, artist, fashion and textile designer, MalmöVÄV
