About Rita Floyd
Ceramic floral worker Rita Floyd from Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, makes china daisies in the exhibition FABRIK. Since the early 1970’s Rita has worked at numerous factories in Stoke-on-Trent before the large scale closure in the late twentieth century. Being present in the exhibition, making the same kinds of delicate china flowers she learned to make as a fifteen year old apprentice, Ritas work evokes questions of identity and values of labour. The performance gives a rare understanding of the embodied knowledge connected to the routines of the production line. The program is part of Neil Brownswords performative installation Factory that, in his own words, is reflecting upon notions of place, skill, people and material objects left behind, following the process of industrial change.
